  2. What’s the Difference? • Biosphere • - A region where organisms live • Biome • - measures the climatic conditions. (ecosystems)

  3. The distribution of biomes • Affected by physical factors: • - Climate ( Temperature & Rainfall) • Varies • Latitude & altitude

  4. Tropical Rainforest • Mainly found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn (Campa Pita, Belize Page) • Monthly temperatures: 20-35˚c with up to 1500mm of precipitation a year. • Has great vegetation with a high diversity of plants. • Trees range: 50 feet to 120 feet tall. - High competition for light so they grow straight up.

  5. Grassland • Very large with surroundings of flowers, herbs and grass. • Soil is too thin and dry for trees to survive. • Average Rainfall of 500-900 • Temperature change for Winter and Summer.Winter – low as -30 / Summer – 30c

  6. Desert • Has less than 300mm of rain in a year. • During the summer temperatures reach 50˚c • Vegetation is able to store water and the swallow stems of plants can photosynthesis.

  7. Tundra • Found in North America, Europe and Siberia (high mountains) • Winter temperature range: -70˚c to -10˚cSummer temperature range: 3-15˚c • Rainfall can be up to 250mm a year • Very windy and the soil is frozen so no trees can be grown. Any plants existing are small.

  8. Temperate Deciduous Forest • Found in Eastern United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan • Low Temperature of -30˚cHighest temperature 30˚c • Has a rainfall of 500-1500mm a year • Dominated by species-rich mixtures of broad-leaved trees occur in relatively moist, temperate. (oaks, maples, beeches)

  9. Shrubland • Normally found in South Africa • Temperature: Hot and dry in the summer / cool and moist in the winter • Up to 200 to 1,000mm of rain per year • Vegetation of mostly herbs & grasses • Plants have learnt to adapt to fire caused by lightning during the hot, dry summers.
