  3. A Korea Divided • North becomes the Communist People’s Republic • Backed by the Soviets and China • South becomes the Republic of Korea • Backed by the US

  4. The Attack • June 1950 North communist attack South Korea • First time United Nations (14 countries) and US send troops to help South Korea • Douglas MacArthur appointed supreme commander of UN troops

  5. The China Effect • China and its 300,000 soldiers comes to the aid of North Korea • War continues for three more years

  6. Stalemate and Armistice • After three years of fighting the battle lines are remain unchanged • July 1953 two sides agree to an ARMISTICE agreement • Cease fire • Redraw 38th parallel
