  2. Background • Currently, ERAP is limited to “wired” connections for remotely connecting to the IRS enterprise network • Types of “wired” connections include: • Dial-Up • Cable • DSL • Fiber Optic • Users are able to connect from home, hotels, flexi-place locations, and Fixed Audit Sites

  3. Purpose • The purpose of the ERAP Broadband Wireless Aircard Project is to further enhance remote connectivity by providing a cellular wireless option leveraging mobile broadband technology provided by major cell phone carriers (i.e. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint). This will allow IRS employees and contractors to remotely connect to the IRS network where ever the cellular provider has coverage.

  4. Benefits • Further enable the “on-demand” capability of IRS electronic resources/tools for tax law research and other required tasks (i.e. LexisNexis, Westlaw, Standards & Poors etc.) • Further enable the “on-demand” capability to upload and download case data from case management tools (i.e. IMS, IBMIS) • Reduce travel time and requirements between Taxpayer sites and IRS offices, which increases efficiency of audits • More Hotels, public spaces and airports have wireless only high speed access. • IRS employees must use dial up today. • Current dial up speed too slow to meet business needs.

  5. ERAP Broadband Wireless Solution • Broadband Cellular Wireless: Access is through cellular-type radio towers and a nationwide provider, such as Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. ERAP Central Site DCC IRS Network Internet ERAP Central Site TCC Mobile

  6. User Profile • Only ERAP users will be able to obtain a Broadband Wireless card • Users across the country will be able to obtain a Broadband Wireless card (network access coverage is limited to what is provided by the vendor) • Any BOD may participate in the program if they are able to provide funding for their users • Deployment will begin in late June 2008 • Users will be provided with detailed instructions for installation and usage • Self-installation capability will be provided • Support will be provided by the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) • The Project Office will train the ESD on troubleshooting techniques and provide job aids
