  1. VERBAL EXPRESSIONS TO ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS R. Buenaventura

  2. WE LOVE SHORT CUTS! = Got to Go • GTG • BRB • ASL • LOL • RUOK • HAND • NALOPKT • SOTMG = Be Right Back = Age, Sex, Location =Laugh Out Loud =Are you OK? = Have a nice day! = Not a lot of people know that =Short of time must go

  3. That is why we convert! Algebraic Expressions Verbal Expressions - a number, variable, or combination of the two connected by a mathematical operation - made up of words and phrases The sum of a number and four x + 4 WHAT’S THIS?

  4. VARIABLE • is a letter that represents a number. • Don't let the fact that it is a letter throw you. Since it represents a number, you treat it just like you do a number when you do various mathematical operations involving variables. • x is a very common variable that is used in algebra, but you can use any letter (a, b, c, d, ....) to be a variable.

  5. KEY WORDS TO SIGNIFY OPERATIONS ADDITION • sum • plus • add to • more than • increased by • total

  6. KEY WORDS TO SIGNIFY OPERATIONS Subtraction • difference of • minus • subtracted from • less than • decreased by • less

  7. KEY WORDS TO SIGNIFY OPERATIONS Multiply • product • times • multiply • twice • trice • of

  8. KEY WORDS TO SIGNIFY OPERATIONS Division • quotient • divide • into • ratio • shared equally  • split evenly

  9. GUIDED PRACTICE • The sum of a number and 10. • The product of 5 and a number. • 3 less than twice a number • 15 more than a number • The quotient of 7 and the product of 3 and a number • 17 less than the sum of a number and 8.

  10. YOUR TURN a)     6n, or 6x, or 6m. Any letter will do. b)    x + 6 c)    x − 6 d)    6 − x e)    x·x·x = x3 • Six times a certain number.   • Six more than a certain number. c)  Six less than a certain number. d)  A certain number subtracted from 6. e)  A number repeated as a factor three times.

  11. MORE CHALLENGING f)    x + x + x g)   x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) h)   2x − 8 i)    3x + 1 f)  A number repeated as a term three times.   g)   The sum of three consecutive whole numbers.  [Hint:  Let x be the first number.] h)  Eight less than twice a certain number.   i)  One more than three times a certain number.

  12. ALGEBRAIC EQUATION“IS” = EQUAL Write each statement algebraically. a)  The sum of two numbers is twenty.   b)  The difference of two numbers is twenty. c)  The product of two numbers is twenty.   d)  Twice the product of two numbers is twenty.   e)  The quotient of two numbers is equal to the sum of those numbers.

  13. ALGEBRAIC EQUATION“IS” = EQUAL a)    x + y = 20 b)    x − y = 20 c)    xy = 20 d)    2xy = 20 e)    xy = x + y
