  2. New Committee Vice-Chair Tara Rodriguez, Kentucky Department of Education Tara taught face to face classes in the public school system in Kentucky for 17 years. She later served as teacher liaison for the Kentucky Virtual High School and as a member of the digital learning team at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).  She is currently a branch manager in the Office of District 180 at KDE working with priority schools.
  3. New Committee Recorder/Secretary Dr. Susan Powell, Edgenuity Susan Powell has an Ed.D in educational leadership with an emphasis in organizational change and school reform. Her resume includes administrative experience in the areas of technology, curriculum and instruction, assessment, and program implementation with particular work in the area of online learning. Powell currently is employed as a Manager of Online Learning for Edgenuity, Inc. and provides a variety supports within the company as well as consults with online educators across the country.

  12. Today’s Presenter Dr. Matthew Ohlson Matthew Ohlson is the Principal of the Global School and has been at FLVS since 2009. At FLVS, Dr. Ohlson has developed numerous initiatives leading to enhanced collaboration, increased student outcomes and significant gains in creating a collaborative school culture. Dr. Ohlson has received recognition as a National Ed-Tech Leader of the Year semi-finalist and National President Management Fellow Nominee and his research has been presented at over 20 national and international conferences. Ohlson received his PhD in Educational Administration and Policy from the University of Florida.

Gender Differences in Math Test Scores Research has shown the following: Girls’ math scores average 10.5 % lower than those of boys in the International 2003 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) Junior high school boys outperform girls on advanced quantitative assessments (Benbow, Lubinski, Shea, & Eftekhari-Sanjani, 2000) High school and college men perform better than women on tests of advanced mathematical ability, including standardized tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Graduate Record Exam (GRE; Brown & Josephs, 1999;Hyde, Fennema, & Lamon, 1990).

Student Math Performance at FLVS Our research showed no significant difference in the performance of males/females Over 5,000 students were included in the study and Student testimonials showed: Females stated that the one-on-one teaching format helped to alleviate apprehension Individualized attention reduced peer-pressure which often leads to students not pursuing certain courses/fields Further research will be conducted to examine if the virtual environment helps to diminish the math gender stereotype that often influences female performance on math assessments (Davies, Spencer, Quinn, & Gerhardstein, 2002)
