SEL Skills SEL skills are essential to academic, personal, social and civic success.
Internal Family Systems Model • Dr. Richard C. Schwartz • “Anatomy of an Emotional Hijacking”
Multiplicity • One of the basic assumptions of IFS • It is the nature of the mind to be subdivided into an indeterminate number of sub-personalities or “Parts” • Living Room illustration
Parts • Sub-personalities that interact internally in sequence and styles similar to the way people interact • Often forced into extreme roles or coping strategies that are protective in nature • Intention of Parts is positive (even when strategy looks destructive)
Self • Everyone has a Self • Different level of entity than parts • When differentiated, the Self is competent, secure, relaxed, and has the ability to listen and receive feedback • The experience of being “centered” in Self
IFS: A Non-Pathologizing Model • Undamaged inner wholeness of Self • Power of the language • Understanding behavior vs. judging it (all behavior has a function) • Healing experience of being heard and understood
Social & Emotional Learning Improves Student Outcomes Meta-analysis of 213 SEL and related interventions Students and staff showed increased social and emotional competence.
Employability SEL builds: • Communication skills • Cooperative team members • Strong leaders • Caring community members
