What type of students succeed in STEM? In order to have a positive experience in a STEM program, a students needs to: • Think critically & solve complex problems • Drive advancements in science, technology and mathematics • Be self motivated, inquisitive thinkers • Work independently and as contributing members of a team, accepting and reacting to improve oneself based on feedback and criticism
STEM Program Description • STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math • a STEM education means that students, parents, teachers and partners are engaged in relevant, rigorous and relationship-based educational experiences • Students participate in inquiry and problem-based instruction that integrates the traditional STEM content areas with social studies, language arts and the fine arts • The curriculum is directly connected to the real work world of work being done by the scientists, engineers, strategists, planners, innovators and entrepreneurs
What will learning look like in the STEM Classroom? • Based around the same Ohio Content Standards • Integration of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering across all content areas • STEM teachers will integrate various subjects to a higher degree using a problem-based-learning method • Students will be challenged to solve real-world problems • STEM lessons will focus on problem-based lessons and group collaboration utilizing various multimedia components: • Flip the Classroom, Prezi, & Animoto
What Arts Opportunities do the Students in STEM take? Semester 2 Band, Choir, Strings, or Communications Semester 1 Band, Choir, Strings, or Communications Gateway to Technology/Project Lead the Way Physical Education Gateway to Technology/Project Lead the Way Elective (Art or Rosetta Stone) • If space is available students can take the following classes: • Advanced Fitness, Dance, Drama, Immersion Art, Music Tech
Oakwood STEM Year 1 • OWMS STEM staff attend Problem-Based Learning Training (4-days at the University of Akron) • Create PBL for first nine weeks • OWMS Staff (3)-attend Project Lead the Way training • Design and Implement Gateway to Technology Course • Create STEM Learning Lab • Lab to integrate educational content into real world work and design
Community Partners Ultimate Goal: Raise $100,000 for the STEM Program • STEM Lab • Field Trips • STEM Extension Nights • Women in Engineering Day • Robotics/Engineering Competitions
STEM Connection to the High School • STEM learning opportunities in 9th grade to include: • Hands-on Science elective course • Robotics elective course • Foundations of Engineering elective course • Formation of a STEM Academy to include STEM components through the senior year • Planning and preparation will occur in 2012-13 to prepare for when the current 8thgraders enter high school in Fall 2013.
