Hot Topics in School Safety School Safety Advisory Committee The purpose of the School Safety Advisory Committee is to advise OSPI and support and assist in the implementation of the work of the Washington State School Safety Center, as well as support the efforts for increased academic achievement by students. Hot Topics in School Safety School Safety Advisory Committee As defined by the School Safety Advisory Committee, the term “school safety” refers to and includes the critical and necessary environment in which effective teaching and learning can take place. School safety supports student learning by creating and promoting a physically, emotionally, socially, and academically secure climate for students, staff, and visitors.

Hot Topics in School Safety Harassment, Intimidation & Bullying RCW 28A.300.285 “Harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any intentional electronic, written, verbal or physical act [which] a) Physically harms a student or damages the student’s property; or b) Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education; or c) Is so severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or d) Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.

Bullying exists when there is intentional harm-doing where a negative action is repeated over time; and there is an imbalance of power

Let’s define the term: Sexting is online communication involving - youth produced sexually explicit or suggestive images - created and shared through the use of personal communication technologies. Hot Topics in School Safety Gang Activity in Schools RCW 28A.600.455– Gang Activity in Schools (1) A student who is enrolled in a public school or an alternative school may be suspended or expelled if the student is a member of a gang and knowingly engages in gang activity on school grounds. (2) "Gang" means a group which: (a) Consists of three or more persons; (b) has identifiable leadership; and (c) on an ongoing basis, regularly conspires and acts in concert mainly for criminal purposes.
