An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun by describing, identifying, or quantifying words.

Descriptive Adjective Colors : Black, Blue, White, Green, Red Sizes : Big, Small, Large, Thin, Thick Shapes : Triangular, Round, Square, Circular Qualities : Good, Bad, Mediocre Personality traits : Happy, Sad, Angry, Depressed Time : Yearly, Monthly, Annually
Descriptive Adjective • Add detail or description to the noun. • The tallman thought he could reach the topshelf of the bookcase. • TALL describes the subject MAN and TOP describes the direct object SHELF. • After the difficultsurgery, the famousdoctors to a nap. • DIFFICULT modifies the object of the preposition SURGERY and FAMOUS describes the subject DOCTOR.
Predicative Adjectives • Follow a linking verb (after the verb BE, SEEM, LOOK etc). • People are interested in this game. • ARE is a linking verb connecting the subject PEOPLE with its descriptor of equal weight INTERESTED. • The two teams look very similar in the tempo that they play. • LOOK is a linking verb connecting the subject TEAMS with its descriptor of equal weight SIMILAR.
Personal Titles • Titles such as Mr., Mrs., Auntie, Uncle, Dr and Lord are attached in front of a name. • Did you visit UncleNeil on your way back home? • “Uncle” is an adjective.
Possessive Adjective • Indicate possession. • Do not touch mydiary. It is personal. • “My” is the adjective. • Few other examples of possessive adjectives are “your”, “his”, “her”, “our”, “their”, etc.
Demonstrative Adjective • Demonstrate or indicate certain things. • Parents of only thosestudents, who have not managed to pass in all subjects, will have to come for tomorrow’s parents-teachers meeting. • “Those” is a form of demonstrative adjective. • Other such adjectives are “that”, “these”, “this”, etc.
Indefinite Adjective • Formed from indefinite pronouns and • Severalsoldiers died in the Pacific War. • “Several” is an adjective, which does not indicate the specific number of soldiers, who died in the war. • Other such adjectives are “any”, “many”, few”, “several”, etc.
