  4. Physical Changes • Physical change – change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties • don’t change a substance’s identity • dissolving

Chemical Changes • A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties • No going back! • Battery dying, breathing oxygen, food digested, fruit ripens • Form new substances • Detected by change in color or smell, fizzing or foaming, sound, heat, or light

  6. Mixtures • Homogeneous mixtures – parts in the mixtures are evenly distributed • Heterogeneous mixtures – substances are not evenly distributed

  7. Breaking Down Mixtures • Mixtures can be separated by physical changes • Example) You can pick the mushrooms off a pizza • Compounds must be broken down by chemical changes
