  1. Class #9 Biodiversity • Species: organisms of the same kind that area able to breed in nature AND produce fertile offspring (these offspring can reproduce) • You should know the 3 levels at which Biodiversity is measured and studied: • genetic • species • ecological

  2. Biodiversity • Patterns of biodiversity: • generally decreases in number as you move away from the tropics • generally decreases as you move up in altitude

  3. Importance of Biodiversity • Utilitarian values: food, medicines, construction materials • Ecological Services: nutrient cycling, hydrological cycles • Aesthetic/Cultural benefits (e.g. religious purposes, art) • Existence Value: species have a right to just exist

  4. Threats to Biodiversity • Extinction: the elimination of species, is a normal process on the natural world. Humans have accelerated process. • Natural causes - e.g. end of dinosaurs during Cretaceous Period, also Permian period 250 million years ago nearly 50% of all plant and animal families died out over the course of 10,000 years,

  5. Human caused Reductions • Habitat destruction • Hunting and Fishing • Predator and Pest Control • Introduction of Exotic Species that become invasive • Pollution • Genetic Assimilation (this related back to habitat destruction- less area for species to exist, populations inbreed

  6. Invasive Species • Poster session examples: • Humans by Chris Westcott • Zebra Mussels by Julia Judson-Rea • Asian Longhorned Beetle by Abigail Poe • Northern Pacific Seastar by Madeleine West • Brown tide by Peter Cutul • Humans by Brian Hermann • Garlic Mustard by Sophie deMaio • Cattle by Ben Dufresne • Some of the poster summaries are on the class web site
