  3. Networks at STAR TAP • International Networks: • There Now: APAN (Asia Pacific Consortium), CA*net2 (Canada), MirNET (Russia), Renater2 (France), SURFnet (The Netherlands), SREN (Singapore), TANet (Taiwan) • Coming in July: CERN, IUCC (Israel), NORDUnet (Nordic Consortium) • US Networks: • Abilene, DREN, ESnet, NISN, NREN, vBNS, MREN

  4. Status on Network Link Turn-ups • International Networks: • IUCC …. 7/1/99 • NORDUnet …. 7/8/99 • CERN …. 7/28/99 • US Networks: • vBNS ===> OC-12 this month - DONE! • Abilene ===> OC-12 this month

  5. Non STAR TAP U.S./International Peering • Abilene/SURFnet& NORDUnet • Ref: Guy Almes’ Slides • CA*net2/3 and US Nets at Seattle • US - Mexico UCAID/CENIC/CUDI • T1 between SDSU (San Diego) and CICESE (Ensenada) • Non Backbone Inter Gigapop Links • both not for profit and commercial examples: NYSERNET, Teleglobe • STAR TAP is at the MREN Gigapop

  6. STAR TAP • STAR TAP has: • Many U.S. and International Peers • Persistence • Dedicated AADS Infrastructure/ISP Access • Value Added Services • Enough Critical Mass to attract the contributions of many members of our community • Cutting Edge projects e.g. Optical IX

  7. STAR TAP Engineering Team • JJ Jamison UIC/STAR TAP • Linda Winkler ANL/Transpac • Alan Verlo UIC/STAR TAP/Eurolink

  8. STAR TAP is a Collaborative Effort • STAR TAP/Eurolink (UIC) • STAR TAP (Ameritech Advanced Data Services) • TransPAC (Indiana University/Argonne National Lab) • MirNET (University of Tennessee) • NOC (Indiana University) • I2 Routing Registry (Merit/University of Michigan) • OCXMON/Coral and AMP (NLANR/MOAT, CAIDA) • 6TAP (ESnet/CANARIE) • Surveyor (Advanced Network & Services) • Web Caches (NLANR, I2 DS WG) • Advanced Video Services (iCAIR/Northwestern University) • MREN

  9. STAR TAPThe Persistent Interconnect for International High-Performance Networks STAR TAPArchitecture

  10. The Next Six Months @ STAR TAP • 6TAP IPv6 Router • IPv4 Routing Service • Internet2 Routing Registry • IP Multicast Service • OC3MON • AMP • Surveyor • 2 Web Caches • DiffServ/Qbone Evaluation

  11. STAR TAP Architecture Cisco 7200 (IPv6) I2 NS WG Web Cache AMP OC3c Various Speeds U.S. Network Connections International Network Connections Ameritech NAP 3 Ascend 5XX ATM switches o o o o o o Cisco LS1010 ATM switch OC3mon Cisco 7505 (IPv4) NLANR Web Cache Surveyor Ethernet

  12. STAR TAP- IPv4 Router - Benefits • One stop shopping for most STAR TAP routes • 16 Networks and 15 MREN Universities now at STAR TAP • More expected next year • Full peering would require 31*30/2 = 465 sessions • Complements layer 2 peering not meant to replace it! • STAR TAP Router is AUP free • Tools will be made available to implement network and link AUPs • Supports High Performance Multicast • BFR coming end of 99

  13. STAR TAP- IPv4 Router - Downside • Extra Hop • STAR TAP router is meant to complement layer 2 peering not replace it • If an extra hop is a problem - direct peering is a quick fix • STAR TAP router can can provide a backup route in case direct route goes down • not likely but a backup route never hurts

  14. STAR TAP- IPv4 Router - Added Value • Web Displays of Routing Tables • Indiana University Weather MAP • Measurement Statistics and Analysis from OC-3MON and Router SNMP MIB • SNMP Proxy Server • Internet2 Routing Registry • Web Caches • AMP
