Early Mesopotamia • Sumerians first to build a civilization • 5 characteristics of civilization • Advanced cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keeping, improved technology CUNEIFORM WRITING
ZIGGURAT • Found in early Mesopotamian societies • Temple at center of city. • Used for worship, sacrifice to local gods AND community grain storage.
The Nile River in Egypt • Flows from the South to the North into the Mediterranean Sea. • Annual floods bring silt (rich soil) to area for farming • Used for transportation of people and resources
The Egyptian Pyramids • Found in Egypt • Built by Egyptian slaves AND paid workers • Used only for burial of pharaohs. • The tomb was seen as a way to the afterlife and it housed the mummy and belongings of dead pharaoh.
Greece and Rome GREECE ROME Roman Empire centered in modern day Italy Includes emperors like Caesar, Augustus, Constantine I and Nero Early Christianity spreads to Rome and popularizes Gladiators • Formed of many city-states • Cultures focused on war, art, literature, beautiful architecture and new democracy • Included cultures like Sparta and Athens
