Math: Converting to Images Yuping Tseng Grainger Engineering Library Information Center University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign http://dli.grainger.uiuc.edu • ytseng1@uiuc.edu Collaborating Partners Workshop
Math: Converting to Images • What to convert? • All independent formulas, I.e. formulas with <dformula> tag. • Some inline formulas, formulas inside a text line or a table, with specific patterns such as radical or fraction. Collaborating Partners Workshop
Math: Converting to Images • How to convert? • Display document in Internet Explore • Hide irrelevant information leaving only the target formula • Resize the display window to fit in the formula • Trim blank and check if there is unknown symbol (shown in red) • Capture the display window and convert the image to JPEG format. • Process is fully automated (Visual Basic) Collaborating Partners Workshop
Math: Converting to Images • Modify original XML file • Insert additional attributes in the formula tag • For independent formulas • For example: <DFORMULA ID="E1" xml:link="simple" href= "DFORMULA_E1.jpg" show="embed" actuate="auto" title="Mathematical Equation E1"> • Inline formula with specific patterns • For example: <FORMULA ID="CNT2_0" xml:link="simple" href="FORMULA_CNT2_0.jpg" show="embed" actuate="auto" title="Mathematical Equation CNT2_0"> Collaborating Partners Workshop
Math: Converting to Images • Remaining issues: • formulas larger than screen size • Hide the right information without hiding the formula itself (markup issue) • Re-positioning formulas after hiding irrelevant information • Unknown symbols • Require some manual processing Collaborating Partners Workshop
