AADMD • A national not-for-profit formed in 2002. • Mission: To improve the quality of healthcare for people with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities. • Membership: mainly physicians and dentists from around the united states who devote a significant portion of their practice to people with IDD.
CAN Project • A national survey of medical and dental schools and residency programs in 2005. (Funded by CDC and Special Olympics) • 81% of medical students had no formal training or experience in caring for adults with IDD • 50% of dental students had no formal training or experience in caring for adults with IDD • 90% of medical residency programs offered no training in caring for adults with IDD • 90-100% of deans and residency program directors were interested in training, if somebody else developed the curriculum.
NCIDM Project • Joint venture between the AADMD (funded by Walmart Foundation), North Carolina MAHEC office (funded by the NCDDC) and the Family Medicine Education Consortium (residency programs in the Northeast US). • Purpose was to develop a nationally vetted, standard curriculum that could be adapted by medical schools and residency programs to teach learners how to care for people with IDD.
NCIDM Project • Project took 2 years and over $300,000 to complete. Involved over 30 expert advisors from around the country and 4 international advisor who had completed similar projects. Vetted through AADMD, MAHEC, FMEC, AUCD, AAIDD, Special Olympics, IASSID and others. • Developed 114 curriculum goals and objects, divided into three learning tiers. Compatible with the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) core competencies. http://aadmd.org/page/interactive-report
NCIDM Project • Multiple residency programs around the country will be piloting this curriculum. Known programs are in CA, IL, OH, MA, DC, NC, KY, NY, NJ. • Beginning in 2013.
PEDD Project • Became acquainted with with FDDC PEDD project last year. • Purpose of the first year of the project is to develop 12 webinars aimed at family physicians based on the NCIDM curriculum goals and objectives. • Webinar series began on July 24th, 2012 and ended October 9th, 2012.
PEDD Project Process • Sought support from IDD-focused agencies around Florida. PEDD Project Process • Each webinar presentation was reviewed by focus group members prior to the live webinar. • Learners asked to fill out a satisfaction survey and must complete a short quiz in order to receive CME credit for participation. • Learners are able to participate and receive CME credit free of charge. This includes viewing the recorded sessions for the next two years.
PEDD Project Process • Webinars were marketed via: the AADMD, the organizations that wrote letters of support, including the FAFP and Florida Pediatric Society. Also the Florida chapter of the ACP and the Florida Medical Society and through local county medical societies. • Each webinar is accredited by the American Academy of Family Physicians. • Each webinar was presented live and will be archived for 2 years on the AADMD website where learners will be able to get CME credit for participation.
