  2. What is the Difference Between Fellowships, Scholarships, and Grants? • None! – it’s all “free money” • Different from loans in that you don’t pay the money back However, there may be something “owed”

  3. How are Fellowships Different from Loans? • Merit-based • Much longer lead time • Can have limits

  4. What Does a Fellowship Pay For? • Pay for Tuition – an award to your account • Pay for Living Expenses – a stipend • Small Cash Award – $$$$

  5. Different Funding for Different Goals • Overseas research • Language acquisition • Travel to archives or research facilities • Professional enhancement – internship

  6. When Should I Begin Looking for Funding? • At least one year before • Deadlines generally occur in fall and spring • Some smaller grants may have rolling deadlines

  7. How Do I Find Funding? • GSAF Website • www.gwu.edu/~fellows • GSAF Database • www.gwu.edu/~fellows/fellows.html

  8. How Do I Find MORE Funding? Two databases that GSAF subscribes to: • The Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS) • Community of Science Funding Opportunities Database (COS)

  9. Where Else? • Seeking funding directly from the facility in which you want to do research • Libraries, collections, research institutes, agencies, etc.

  10. Any Other Places to Look? • Google! – sometimes you can find awards that aren’t listed other places • Your colleagues • Academic and professional organizations

  11. I Found a Fellowship! How do I Start? • Read the fellowship literature. What is the mission of the agency that is giving away the fellowship? • Read the instructions • Begin the essay/proposal portion with a basic paragraph that answers the where, what when and why questions. Then elaborate!

  12. How Can GSAF Help? • Read drafts of your proposal • Make copies of you application and proposal for mailing • Consultation on specific fellowship questions
