SEQUENCE Energy Situation & Alternate Sources Smart Hydro Turbine Current Status Conclusions Recommendations
PAKISTAN : ENERGY SITUATION Ref : The Lahore Journal of Economics 15: SE (September 2010): pp. 75-10
MEASURES TO MEET SHORTFALL NEED EXISTS TO EXPLORE ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCES • Energy Conservation • Energy Management • Production Capacity Enhancement • Thermal (Fossil Fuels, Oil, Coal and Gas) • Environment issues (Harmful emissions, global warming) • Increasing price and scarcity of fuel • Nuclear • Radioactive waste disposal • Accidents more devastating (e.g. 1986 Chernobyl incident) • Technological complexity and dependence • Hydel • Infrastructure is costly and construction is time consuming • Political constraints
ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCES • Preferred alternate is renewable energy source • Available naturally • Replenishes quickly • Renewable energy sources • Solar Energy • Wind Energy • Hydel Energy
HYDEL ENERGY ACQUISITION • Potential Energy • Kinetic Energy • Accelerating • Channels • Run of the River • Dams / Falls Options
HYDEL POTENTIAL : PAKISTAN Ref : http://www.pres.org.pk/category/reaepakistan/hydro/ • Pakistan blessed with • Enormous natural hydel resources • Streams and Rivers
HYDEL POTENTIAL : INDIA Ref : Energy for Sustainable Development. Sep, 2008 • Total estimates of small Hydro Projects • 15,000 MW • Operational • 611 projects 2,045 MW • Under construction • 225 projects 669 MW
RUN OF THE RIVER • Small hydro projects are being employed by various countries • Run of the River concept is under study as abundant hydel resource is available • Envisaged advantages of the concept • Relatively lower cost • Turbine operates under natural flow conditions • Simpler infrastructure • Modular design • Source of power at remote areas

INSTALLATION Attachment Points for Attachment Cable Masonry Anchors with Hooks (e.g. Eye Hooks) Lowering of Turbine Using a Crane
PROPOSED TURBINE PARK Over head Cable 94 m 9 m 0.135 m 58 m • Number of turbines depend on canal width • 10~12 Turbines possible in Ghazi Barodha
PROPOSED TURBINE PARK 2.5 m 50 m
SHP IN GHAZI BAROTHA CANAL • Installation Option-1 • Using existing bridges / overhead structures • Excessive collaboration • Bridge designer clearance for installation • Installation Option-2 • Using concrete lining of the canal to fasten cables for holding turbine • Drilling in concrete lining may induce stresses • Installation Option-3 • Construction of shore foundation on canal banks to tie overhead cables for holding turbine
SHORE FOUNDATION One Ton Steel + 700 ft3 concrete + Labour + Taxes Approx. Cost per Support : Rs. 400,000/- Support for Cable Installation Holding Multiple Turbines
CURRENT STATUS • SHP is in assembled state • CFD Analysis carried out to evaluate the flow properties • Optimum distances between two turbines • Optimum distance between two consecutive parks • Possible water channels identified (Ghazi Barotha) • Various installation options explored • Relevant agencies / authorities were identified • Awaiting testing to verify the results at Upper Julhem Canal
RESEARCH ROADMAP • Collaboration for trials with • Department of Agriculture • Any Possible Canal in Punjab • Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) • WAPDA (Power Wing) • Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara (GBTI) • Preparation of test plan • Testing does not require modification / construction of civil work. • Data acquisition & analysis • Feasibility Report 22
SUCCESS STORIES AROUND THE WORLD Turbines successfully operating at Germany, Switzerland and Denmark 1.5 MW project under way at Bangladesh Test units running at Peru and Indonesia Testing under way at Brazil Project has ceased at India due Bureaucracy
Cost Analysis Cost of one SHP turbine (inclusive of installation) = 18,000 € Conversion rate = 142 WAPDA Electricity cost (last 6 months) = PKR 18~25 Increase per year ~ 30 to 35 %
Return on Investment Unit cost = 15 PKR/ KWh Unit cost = 18 PKR/ KWh
Return on Investment Unit cost = 20 PKR/ KWh Unit cost = 25 PKR/ KWh
FUNDING SOURCES : GREEN ENERGY • German OEM agreed to invest for 10 turbines after completion of feasibility of project and finalization of site • United Nations provides 25% funds for the alternate energy project under Green Energy Program (CO2 Emission) • German Govt provided funding for alternate energy source projects through their Embassy for German Equipment • Federal / Provincial Govt interests based on successful feasibility of project
CONCLUSIONS • Maintenance as per condition • Seal to be inspected after 3 ~ 4 years • Body external visible inspection only • Power generation system will be based on modular concept • CFD analysis reveals that Run of the River turbine has no effect on flow at the end point, as velocity is regained • Installation option has no effect on canal infra structure • Run of the River may be pursued for completion
PROJECT OUTCOMES • Successful initial testing will be a breakthrough • Project will be Talk of the Town • Social Impact on Society • Long term collaboration with the company for supply in Pakistan • Negotiation with OEM would be done (a) Future procurement of turbine (b) ToT for assembling/manufacturing • Feasibility Report/ Research Paper • Funding can be acquired based on feasibility 29
