Our nation’s current health: • We spend more than $2 trillion dollars on healthcare per YEAR • Almost 2/3 of US adults aged 20-74 years are overweight, including 30% who are obese (NHANES). • In the past 3 decades, adulthood obesity incidence has increased 100%
Children’s Health “Because of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.” –Surgeon General Richard Carmona, March 2004
Children’s health: • Among persons aged 6-19 years old, an estimated 15%, or 9 million youths, are overweight. • In the past 3 decades, the numbers have more than tripled for children aged 6-11 and doubled for adolescents aged 12-19.
Diabetes • One in three American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes if they adopt the nation's inactive and overeating lifestyle, according to a new government report. • For Hispanic children, the odds are even worse: About one in two will develop the disease, says K.M. VenkatNarayan, MD, chief of the diabetes epidemiology section at the CDC Atlanta.
Cancer • "Cancer will affect 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the United States, and the number of new cases of cancer is set to nearly double by the year 2050."(from the National Cancer Institute)
The Solution: • Preventative, patient-powered natural medicine, which includes education about healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
Mission: • To educate Americans how to live up to their health potential – psychologically, emotionally, physically & spiritually – through natural medicine and lifestyle choices.
What is naturopathic medicine? Based on 6 principles: • Do not harm • Identify and treat the cause. • Let nature heal. • Treat the whole person. • Educate patients. • Prevent illness.
Our Plan • To educate the country! Through community events and media attention - connect with the people where they are and challenge them to take steps to improve their health.
Accomplishments from The Run 2011: • Internet, television, radio and newspaper coverage • Incredible opportunities to educate in close to 100 towns and cities that included ranging from an audience of 250 grade school children to the offices of 25 members of Congress in Washington, DC • Proclamations from governors in support of natural medicine in the states of: Colorado, New York and Connecticut, and Board of Supervisors and mayors of the cities of: San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Louisville, Colorado. • Herb Schultz, the region IX director of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, expressed his 100% commitment to natural medicine in our struggle for a healthier country.
The Run 2012 • Godby brothers – Jeremiah & Isaiah are going to do a solo run along the West Coast • Carrying batons with petitions inside that support natural/naturopathic medicine for people that they meet along the way to sign. • To also attract media and attention of passers-by on the highways and freeways, they will be wearing bright capes with The Run Logo on the back!
