Batman & Robin Visual style
Smoke & darkness • Gotham city is traditionally a dark place • Smoke adds to the comic aesthetic – not natural • Darkness allows for specific emphasis to be placed with lighting and specific use of colour
Lighting • Often a large amount of unnatural lighting • A lot of the lighting is from ‘natural’ elements within the film universe (ie: lights are present in the room rather than added as an effect) • Large amounts of unnatural colour in lighting • Lighting often hits camera directly (pic 2) during sweeping shots – this creates ‘natural shots’ ie: shots that don’t feel like someone is sitting behind the camera filming
Colours • Villains have specific colours attached: • Mr Freeze has blue (ice) • Poison Ivy has green and red (plants and more exotic plants) • Films uses the medium to produce a range of colours not possible in comics (due to cost)
Epic structures • Gotham city has enormous man-made statues and other structures • Sometimes feature locations (pic 1) • Sometimes part of the background (pic 2) • Really define the city as a man-made entity rather than a natural landscape • Assist in the feel of the city being enormous physically • Also help to set Gotham apart from real cities (ie: idea of a huge statue holding up an observatory would be prohibitively expensive)
How many toys can we make from this? • Film had huge emphasis on merchandising after success of Batman Forever • This was kept in mind as many parts of the film’s visual design was developed • Figurines, toy vehicles, etc. • Batman credit card – “never leave the cave without it”
Appeal to a wide variety of people • Beautiful women: • Elle Macpherson • Uma Thurman • Female heroine • Car chase & motorbike race
Appeal to a wide variety of people • Sexual attraction & innuendo • Visual inspiration from previous Batman works
Appeal to a wide variety of people • Fights • Pitiful (to some extent) antagonists • Romance
One-liners and puns • Often related to what the viewer sees • Somewhat bad-taste • Character-based (ie: ice, freeze, winter) • Very large in number
