  4. For the FIRST time in the history of EHT schools…. An EHT School beat NCLB!

  6. Spring 2007, EHT beat NCLB: 97% district-wide!

  7. The Ultimate Compliment!? • October 2006, visit to Middle School by NJDOE • Top six schools in the state for improvement in test scores • Increase in LAL – 1 in a 1,000! • Increase in Math – 1 in 10,000!

  8. Congratulations! Middle School! You beat overwhelming odds!

  9. EHT vs. NCLB! Subtitle: David vs. Goliath! (Don’t count out David just yet!)

  10. NCLB is simple! • States, develop standards in LA, Math and Science • Test in grades 3 through 8 and 11 on those standards And…..

  14. Building Must Make AYP(Adequate Yearly Progress) • Language Arts Literacy ParticipationProficiency 10 subgroups 10 subgroups • Mathematics ParticipationProficiency 10 subgroups 10 subgroups • Attendance/Graduation Rate

  15. Safe Harbor: • A subgroup significantly increases the proficiency level of a subgroup, but does not meet the benchmark. • NCLB will give credit for meeting benchmark.

  18. Why did we develop Pacing Guides and Quarterly Tests?

  19. 3 EHT Curriculum Flaws: • Too much content! • Our timing was off! • Minimal practice against state tests!

  20. EHT Actions Taken! • Teach less content not more! • “Pace” ourselves with test dates in mind • Practice against state tests (Quarterly tests are one example)

  21. Pacing Guides • In LAL and math, grades K – 8 • Focuses on NJCCS! (not MH or HM) • Built with Spring test dates in mind

  22. Pacing guides: • “Review week” built into every quarter • 3rd quarter test, 2 weeks before test. • Built by you!

  23. Quarterly Test Development • Assesses NJCCS (pacing guides) taught by marking period • Uses state test vocabulary and format (method of assessment) • Make tests cumulative • 3rd quarter test is mini – state test.

  24. Limits of Pacing Guides/QT: • Not perfect • Need to be re-visited each year • Quarterly tests tend to be one instructional period

  26. The Big Stuff! • All disciplines to address LAL and math goals! (Middle School approach to this)! • Analyze quarterly tests! • Classroom analysis state test results! • Use DI to address student needs found above!

  27. “Small Stuff”! What if we.. • Included one difficult ASK “test directions” word on our weekly spelling tests? • Intentionally taught how to “read” difficult ASK math words during math time (e.g. “area”, “perimeter”, etc.) • Shared with your parents the above?
