Life as a Young Man • Heavily emulated life of his favorite author, Ernest Hemingway • Paratrooper in the Korean War • Police officer • Married in 1950 • Graduated from Rutgers with a B.A. in 1951 Ernest Hemingway

The Killer Angels • Shaara’s great-grandfather was a member of the 4th Georgia Infantry • Left behind letters that began his fascination with the Civil War • Wrote The Killer Angels 1966-1970 • Published in 1974
The Killer Angels “The book’s genius is in Shaara’s ability to narrow down a huge subject to a few people and events that could make it personal for the reader. Shaara’s background provided the insight to see both sides of the conflict. The results are crisp characters, vivid images, and an objectivity that avoided making heroes out of one side or the other.” (Bailey 4)
More The Killer Angels • Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 • A prestigious award given annually since the late ’40s to authors of outstanding fiction dealing with American life
Gettysburg “There was not much public acclaim because [The Killer Angels] came out during the Vietnam War, a bad time for a war novel. Fame would not come until much later, five years after Shaara’s death, when the film based on the book was released.” (Bailey 4)
