Rationale for U.S involvement • Panamanians were rebelling against the special regulations of martime traffic at ports at the entry to the canal. • U.S also est. its own customs, tariffs, & postal services in the zone. • We wanted to regain control of the ports of Ancon & Cristobal. All together this involved a reduction of tariffs and the free passage of people and goods
Actions the U.S took in intervening • President Teddy Roosevelt visited Panama in November of 1904. The visit resulted in an agreement. • We gained control of the ports of Ancon & Cristobal. • There was little military conflict needed.
Panama/US relationship • They have a bilateral relationship. Meaning… They help each other out back and forth • +
Group evaluation: • Right thing. We needed to help because they ended up our allies. • Benefit: We got lower tariffs, and had ports for things to be shipped in and out. Plus, Panama is our allies today and we help each other out.
