1. Database ARC, AUTH, CSIC, SRI, ULL, IART • Creation of databank of Artemia sites with information re.: • strain characteristics (all aspects) • ecological information
2. Cyst bank ARC, CSIC, SRI, UU, Jim Clegg • Optimization of integrated cyst bank system, with • central cyst bank (ARC) • complementary regional cyst banks Actions : • first ‘cleaning’ of ARC cyst bank • distribution of CD-rom with cyst bank to • number of partners • information received about local cyst banks from • MEDBas, SRI, UFRN, UBA, IART
3. Regional partnership: Central Asia Cooperation through Flemish Education project with Tyumen State Agricultural Academy (TSAA; Siberia, Russia) private partners (Inve)
3. Regional partnership: Central Asia (continued) GVS & BMarden mission to Tyumen June 2002 : visit lakes Kurgan area (border area with Kazakhstan): ecology, population monitoring GVS participation to International Salt Lake Symposium, Khakassia, Russia, 23-26 July 2002 (organized by International Society of Salt Lake Research) ± 100 participants, 15 non-Russian 8 Artemia-presentations ‘theoretical’ interest in local Artemia exploitation, but high reluctance from authorities (small lakes, used for balneotherapy): pseudo-(il)legal harvesting
3. Regional partnership: Central Asia (continued) • NATO workshop • ‘Artemia Biodiversity in the Newly Independent States:Current Global Resources and their Sustainable Exploitation"Moscow, Russia, 17-19 July 2002 co-organized by ARC and TSAA • participation by ARC, CLO-DVZ, AUTH, JClegg, TMcRae, Bmarden, • 12 participants from Russia, 3 from Kazakhstan, 3 from • Uzbekistan, 1 from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Belarus each • presentation : State of study of Artemia from Tibet
3. Regional partnership: Central Asia (continued) NATO workshop : conclusions : need for minimal uniformity in approach : harmonization of techniques, concepts and insights need for multidisciplinary approach need for minimal legal framework for Artemia exploitation
3. Regional partnership: Central Asia (continued) • “Scientific Committee for the study of Artemia resources in NIS countries” • 15 members, each responsible for geographical area: email; website • Objectives • coordinate and exchange experimental planning and results of ongoing R&D activities • ARC interface with INCO project Artemia biodiversity • Topics • 1. Biodiversity studies: • identification and characterisation of sites • ecology/population dynamics • genetics • life history • use in aquaculture • 2. Setting up of reference strains and samples for comparative studies • 3.3. Standardisation of methodologies
