Themes, Motifs, and Symbols • THEMES • Beauty can be found anywhere. • It’s the journey, not the outcome, that matters most. • We all have a personal legend, an individual reason for being. • MOTIFS • Journey • Love • Personal Legends • SYMBOLISM • Treasure • Rocks / minerals (alchemy)
What is alchemy? • “a form of chemistry and speculative philosophy practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and concerned principally with discovering methods for transmuting baser metals into gold and with finding a universal solvent and an elixir of life.” (Webster’s Dictionary) • Alchemy works on both literal and figurative levels in the novel. • Literal: turn base metals into gold • Figurative: turn ordinary life into something amazing
