The moonscape limestone karst has a distinctive pattern known as karren evolved from centuries of erosion. Galway City Galway city is a small, friendly and culturally rich town. With a large university it is a centre of learning in the west of Ireland. Sitting on waterways including the River Corrib, Lough Corrib, and the Atlantic ocean, Galway has a commercial port and numerous water sports and activities. The city itself sits by the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) region. The city is bi-lingual and you will hear many people speaking Irish in their daily lives. During the summer season Galway hosts many popular festivals including the Galway Arts Festival and the Galway races.
Galway Optional Touring Connemara & Kylemore Abbey Connemara is the name given to the most westerly region of County Galway. This area contrasts starkly with the rest of the county in that it is shaped by the mountains, the sea and Lough Corrib. It is a beautiful if often bleak place during the winter months. The area is a favourite with visitors. ----------------------- Kylemore Abbey was built in the middle of the 19th century by Mitchell Henry. The little Gothic Chapel, on one of many wooded laneways surrounding the school, has recently been refurbished to its original condition.
Galway Optional Touring The Aran Islands The Aran Islands are a group of three islands located off Galway Bay, on the wild Atlantic west coast of Ireland. The largest and most inhabited is Inishmore (Inish meaning island) which has an airstrip and ferry port. Fishing and farming were the main occupations of the Irish speaking islanders who were frequently cut off from the mainland by harsh weather conditions. The famous Aran sweater was created by the local women using Celtic patterns. The other islands Inishmaan, and Inisheer can be visited.
