  2. Impact of Proposed Cuts • More financial hardship during tough times • Average member has multiple meds • Negative health outcomes • skipping or ‘rationing’ meds • Increased emergency/late stage healthcare use – costly • Confusion of timing with healthcare reform • Many will see cuts as the result of passage

  3. Advocates Responses • Principle: Do not make cuts to ICRx consumer benefits before exhausting all other program savings opportunities

  4. Ideas for Savings • Healthcare reform saves million of dollars (50% discount by drug companies in the donut hole 2011) • Assure that all qualified ICRx members get Extra Help • Through SSA application, Medicare Savings Programs (MSP), Medicaid, buy-in or state applies • Change eligibility for MSP to leverage federal dollars • Implement a comprehensive medication management program – assure dollars spent effectively • Simplify ICRx annual application process to re-determinations

  5. Advocacy Process • Letter to the Governor • Stories showing impact on real people • Gain support from legislators to maintain benefit levels • Media and communication strategies • Engage ICRx members (older adults and people with disabilities) as advocates
