1932-20,000 WW 1 veterans came to Washington D.C. to receive a bonus for their WW 1 service that was promised by Congress. They did not receive it until 1945. The Bonus Army. President Hoover and Congress agreed to only pay for their trip back home.

  1. 1932-20,000 WW 1 veterans came to Washington D.C. to receive a bonus for their WW 1 service that was promised by Congress. • They did not receive it until 1945. The Bonus Army

President Hoover and Congress agreed to only pay for their trip back home. • The Veterans protested, and Hoover ordered the Army to remove them. • The Army attacked them with tear gas and drove them out of D.C. • Hoover was not re-elected because of this and his failure to lead the U.S. out of the Depression.   3. 1932 Democratic New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president with a promise of a “ New Deal”-a series of programs intended to end the Great Depression. • FDR knew people needed hope, so he gave weekly radio updates to the American people about what the government was doing to end the Depression FDR Takes Over Fireside Chats

  4. First, FDR closed all banks for 4 days with the promise that when they reopened, they would be in sound shape. He said “ get your money out from under the mattress America”-this restored people’s trust in the banking system • Congress went into a 100 day special session to start the New Deal program Banks Close… 100 Days

The laws passed during the 100 days had 3 goals… • Relief for the hungry • Recovery for agriculture and industry • Reforms to change the way the economy worked • Some feared the government was spending too much money • Some feared the New Deal was moving the country towards communism The Three R’s Responses to the New Deal

  6. Workers paid money into a special fund, and after they retired they would receive a pension. • This act also helped laid-off workers, and disabled workers The Social Security Act of 1935

  7. Business leaders opposed FDR’s re-election because they thought he was spending too much money and would keep increasing taxes. He won every state but 2 with the votes of working-class America and African Americans • African Americans were loyal to Republican Party because they had won them their freedom • FDR’s programs to help the poor won African American voters over FDR Re-elected in 1936

  8. State leaders did not want the federal government interfering in the state’s economy, and telling them how to handle their affairs. • They believed the state should handle the relief efforts during the Depression. The New Deal in NC

It regulated working conditions, hours, and minimum wages. • The NRA helped the textile mills and the furniture industry recover in NC • Paid farmers to grow fewer crops of various kinds to bring crop prices back up • 81 CCC camps in NC that employed men between 18-25 to plant trees, restore eroded land, and build hiking trails and parks The NRA in NC National Recovery Administration AAA(Agricultural Adjustment Act) CCC(Civilian Conservation Corps)

  10. She pushed her husband to bring women into government jobs, and actively worked for social reforms Eleanor Roosevelt
