The Bonus Army was a group of WWI veterans demanding compensation • Congress had approved a bonus that would be paid to WWI veterans, but it was not to be paid until 1945 • Protesters gathered in Washington DC demanding that the bonus be paid immediately • When congress chose not to pay the veterans immediately, about 2,000 stayed in Washington to protest • President Hoover sent in the army to drive out the protesters using bayonets, fire, and tear gas
