THE EFFECTS OF LIQUID ON NAILS BY:ALEXANDRA MARIE SMITH
PURPOSE/PROBLEM • TO SEE HOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIQUID AFFECTS A TYPE OF NAIL OVER A FIVE DAY PERIOD.
HYPOTHESIS • MY HYPOTHESIS IS THAT DIFFERENT KINDS OF LIQUIDS WILL CAUSE DIFFERING AMOUNTS OF RUST ON THE NAILS.
procedures • First you get out all the necessary materials: 5 nails and bottles of Water, Coke, Sprite, and Sweet Tea. • Set one nail off to side as the control (constant). • Then you put a nail in each bottle of liquid. • You screw the lid back on. • For the next 4 days, you get the nails out of the bottles with tongs, compare them to the control nail, and record what they look like. • Record all data and compare the nails in a data table at the end of experiment.
observation • Overall, I observed that the nails inside the Coke and Sprite bottles changed the most. The Sweet Tea nail had fewer changes, but still showed some rust. The distilled water nail had no signs of changes at all. As the days progressed, the nails rusted faster in the Coke and Sprite bottles. They were a dark color and dull by the last day. The sweet tea nail was a lighter color, but still rusty. The nail in the distilled water didn’t change, except for losing its shininess. The control nail had no changes over the 5 days.
CONCLUSION • In this experiment, I found out that the ingredients that make up Coke and Sprite not only cause rusting, but do it at a fairly fast rate compared to the other liquids. I also observed that the Sweet Tea has some of the same ingredients because the nail showed rusting also. The Coke and Sprite have more or stronger ingredients that cause rusting than Sweet Tea though, since they rusted more. The water didn't change at all because it’s distilled bottled water, which means there are no extra ingredients in it to cause reactions such as rusting and dullness. The control nail never changed because it wasn’t exposed to any type of liquids. So, in conclusion some liquids will cause rusting and at different rates on the nails.
