  1. Physical and Chemical Changes

  2. Matter is... • everywhere. • anything that takes up space and has mass. • constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.

  3. Physical Change Physical changes occur when matter changes its property, but not its chemical nature.

  4. Physicalproperty changes could include a change in: • volume • mass • weight • density • texture • shape • size • color • odor

  5. Physical Change

  6. Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes that matter undergo when it becomes new or different matter.

  7. To identify a chemical change look for signs such as: • color change • bubbling and fizzing • light production • smoke • presence of heat

  8. Chemical Change Example: • A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. • Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. • These change chemically as they light up the sky.

  9. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Sugar dissolving in tea • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  10. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  11. Correct!

  12. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Logs burning • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  13. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  14. Correct!

  15. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Breaking water up by separating it into hydrogen and oxygen • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  16. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  17. Correct!

  18. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Cutting paper • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  19. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  20. Correct!

  21. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Crushing an aspirin • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  22. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  23. Correct!

  24. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Metal rusting • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  25. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  26. Correct!

  27. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Lighter fluid burining • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  28. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  29. Correct!

  30. Is it a chemical or physical change? • An egg rotting • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  31. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  32. Correct!

  33. Is it a chemical or physical change? • An egg breaking • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  34. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  35. Correct!

  36. Activity Time!!!

  37. Purpose: To figure out what type of change is happening: physical or chemical?

  38. Materials: • 2 tablespoons baking soda  • ¼ cup vinegar • 1 balloon • 1 bottle • funnel

  39. Hypothesis: If baking soda and vinegar and combined in a container sealed by a balloon, then ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________. **Your team will decide together what to write

  40. Procedure: • Pour vinegar into the graduated cylinder. • Stretch open the balloon mouth and using your notecard funnel carefully pour the 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon • Carefully stretch the balloon mouth over the bottle. Make sure the balloon mouth is tightly around the neck of the bottle. • Hold the balloon to the side so that the baking soda does not fall into the vinegar. • Now, be ready to watch! Shake the balloon carefully so that it stays attached to the bottle, but so that the baking soda falls into the bottle.

  41. Observations: • Draw a picture of observations of what happened to the balloon after the substances were mixed together. • LABEL YOUR DRAWING.

  42. Conclusion: • What kind of change(s) took place? • How do you know?
