The Challenge To create a portable, lightweight charging system using two energy sources that can power a mobile device without using standard wall or vehicle power
Initial Design Concepts Chris: Solar & Piezoelectric Andrea: Solar & Wind Abel: Solar & Mechanical Tomi: Mechanical & Piezoelectric
Final Decision Solar and Crank Powered Charger • Solar energy will be used from solar panels located around the sides and top of charger for an alternative use of energy in order to charge devices on the go. • A mechanical hand powered crank will also be located on one of the sides of the charger for another energy source. In case there is no sun or energy stored from the sun the hand powered crank could be turned clockwise or counterclockwise in order to store energy. • Whenever the charger is not in use by solar or mechanical power the energy will be stored and a device can be easily plugged into the charger for self charging.
Solar and Crank Powered Charger Dimensions • The shape of the charger is a hexagon cylinder with 5 solar panels and the sides and one on top. • On one side of the hexagon cylinder there will be a USB port. • The side of the charger without a solar panel will have a crank for the alternative use of energy along with five colored lights displaying the level of energy the charger has stored • The top and bottom of the charger will be 5 inches wide while the height of it will be about 7 inches. Each side will be about 2.5 inches in width. • The crank is about 3.75 inches in height. • The solar panels on the side will be about 6.2 inches by 1.7inches. The height of the smaller panel on the sides will be 5.1 inches by 1.7 inches. The hexagon solar panel on the top will be 2.02 inches on each side of the hexagon. • The approximate weight of the charger is 2.5 lbs
