  2. CONTENT • Military Mapping in Hungary • The National Spatial Data Infrastructure in Hungary • Topographic Mapping • The Hungarian Topographic Programme

  3. 1919 The Independent Hungarian Defence Mapping 2001 Mapping Service of the Hungarian Defence Forces Ministry of Defence Mapping Company

  4. Responsibilities of Mapping Service of HDF • Geographic Support of defence and peacekeeping operations • Planning of the National Topographic Mapping tasks • Standardisation • Geographic Information Exchange

  5. Responsibilities of MoD Mapping Company • Production of topographic and special maps and aeronautical charts • Maintenance of Digital Geographic Databases • Map supply and Geographic Information Service for civilian users

  6. The National Spatial Data Infrastructure in Hungary (1.) • Concept for the Surveying and Mapping Data Bank • Recommendations on a governmental programme for the making of a spatial data infrastructure (40-160 M €) X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X • National Spatial Data Project (1,5 M + 8 M €): • Digital Base Map (DAT) standards and related specifications were created; • National standards for digital military maps; • First version of the Digital Topographic Database: DTA-50 database; • Creation of spatial data systems for 24 settlements and Budapest districts; • Introduction of GPS technology; • Improvement of yield estimation based on remote sensing; • Establishment of the Administrative Borders Database.

  7. The National Spatial Data Infrastructure in Hungary (2) • National Spatial Data Infrastructure concept: • – the elaboration of the National Spatial Data Strategy; • – the establishment of the National Spatial Data Warhhouse; • – the enforcement of the National Cadastre Programme; • – the creation of base maps of settlements, transport and other sectors; • –the formation of a parcele based information framework; • –the launch of the Hungarian Topographic Programme; • – the creation of a Unified Geographic Address Registry; • – the accomplishment of the Aerial Survey of Hungary. 8. Topographic Mapping Tasks § 76/1996 Act on Surveying and Mapping Activities Unified topographic mapping system Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development Ministry of Defence 1:25 000 – 1:250 000 1:10 000 Defence Users Civilian Users

  9. The Condition of Topographic Maps • Present state of Hungarian topographic maps: • Primarily they are in analogue form (traditional paper maps); • Their content is outdated to a great deal. The topographic maps are usually 20 to 25 years old and their revision is essential; • In many cases the civilian and military map systems are overlapping in scales (1:25 000, 1:100 000, 1:200 000), their duplicate production incurs unjustifiable extra expenses; • Latest update: • 1:10 000 >>>>>>>>> 1975 – 1999 • 1:25 000 – 1: 200 000 >>>>>>>>> 1983 - 1997 • Ongoing works: • 1:10 000 revision & digitalisation ( from 1995 to 20??) • 1:50 000 updating & digitalisation ( from 2001 to 2003)

  23. Internet Catalogue of Aerial Photographs • The catalogue allows • storing and visualising technical data of survey camera aerial photographs; • visualisation of quick look images of the aerial photographs. • Query can be made in four ways at the moment: • by map; • by name of a settlement; • by X and Y co-ordinates of the central point and radius; • by rectangle areas.

  24. Hungarian Topographic Program (1) • Aim: • Creat uniform, interdisciplinary base infrastructure of modern GIS • Object: • development of a topographic database and map series suitable for defence, administrative and national economic purposes as well as for fulfilling the requirements of NATO and EU integration and Hungarian demands for professional use.
