LEAP Test Components • English Language Arts • Writing • Reading and Responding • Research to Build Knowledge • Language • Math • Science • Social Studies
Passing the LEAP Test • Achievement Levels: • Advanced: A student at this level has demonstrated superior performance beyond the level of mastery. • Mastery: A student at this level has demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter and is well prepared for the next level of schooling. • Basic: A student at this level has demonstrated only the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. • Approaching Basic: A student at this level has only partially demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. • Unsatisfactory: A student at this level has not demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. • Students must pass ELA and Math tests with at least one Basic and one Approaching Basic or above
Writing • Writing in response to reading • Evidence-based writing (must use the text to support the written response) • Includes one or two passages • Emphasis on informational text • Includes grade-level vocabulary
Reading and Responding • Several reading passages, both literary and informational texts • Multiple-choice items that measure reading comprehension • Multiple-choice items that measure important vocabulary in the passages • Complex constructed-response items that ask students to analyze one or two passages and use evidence from the text(s) in their written responses
Research to Build Knowledge • A focus on text-rich resources (articles from magazines, book excerpts, web pages, etc.) and related ancillary materials (charts, graphs, diagrams, etc.) that fit the grade 4 standards • Test items that measure reading comprehension, including defining important vocabulary, as well as explaining the structure of the sources • Test items that measure research skills that include categorizing information and providing a list of sources
Language • One passage • Identify corrections in errors for capitalization, punctuation, usage, and spelling.
