NHS Lothian Drug Treatment What was happening in 2007 • Excellent at harm reduction and maintenance services • Pathway to freedom from All Drugs not available • GAP in Services Which had potentially a large Market • NHS Lothian innovatively supported LEAP to complete treatment spectrum
LEAP • Formulate treatment based on Patient needs • Evidence based Treatment with integrated data capture systems • Integrate what the EVIDENCE suggests works

Vocational Training • Evidence based • Provided by ‘Transition’ • SQA qualification during LEAP • Encourage clients to go on to complete Transition programme
Leap Stats • 16 Beds, 20 treatment places total, 12 week programme • Open 2.5 years and > 800 referrals • Assessing 87 clients in the here and now • 57 people on waiting list • 260 admissions (18 beds) • 47 different people attending aftercare • From the 2 year external evaluation report by Figure 8: • AllOpiate, Methadone and Cocaine users at intake…abstinent at 9 months! • The graduate group showed significant positive changes in satisfactions with work, alcohol use, drug use, legal situations, family relationships & other relationships (Normal Life??)
Conclusions • NHS Lothian's Substance misuse directorate is using evidence based health/work interventions based on client need • NHS Lothian is leading by example in health/work partnership working • Integrating LEAP/Transition holistically results in high quality services for patients, resulting in measurable increased quality of life!!!
