Stages in the Butterfly Life Cycle There are 4 stages in the butterfly life cycle: Adult butterfly Eggs Caterpillar (larva) Chrysalis (pupa)
Butterfly Eggs We did not get to see our larva as eggs (except photos from the internet). We received our larva 2 to 3 days after they emerged from their eggs.
25 April 06 We learned not to take the lid off for any reason! • Day 1
26 April 06 I can’t believe how much they have grown! • Day 2, 3½ cm
27 April 06 The larva grew ½ cm from yesterday. • Day 3, 4 cm
28 April 06 The larva grew ½ cm from yesterday. • Day 4, 4½ cm
29 April 2006 The larva grew ½ cm from yesterday. • Day 5, 10:00 am, 5 cm One larva is at the top of the cup.
29 April 2006 • Day 5, 8:49 pm All of the larva are at the top. One larva is in the J shape.
30 April 2006 All of the larva are at the top. Four larva are shaped like Js. • Day 6, 9:22 am
30 April 2006 One larva turned into a pupa in 7 minutes. There is still one larva not in the shape of a J. • Day 6, 12:20 pm
30 April 2006 By 3 pm the last larva hung like a J. We now have 3 chrysalises. • Day 6, 5:27 pm
1 May 2006 The last larva turned into a pupa. • Day 7, 6:45 am
Larva Stage Our caterpillars where in the larva stage for 7 days.
Chrysalis Stage It took all of our larva 18 hrs & 25 min to go from the J shape to a chrysalis.
Meconium • Don’t worry, that is not blood. It is the coloring of the butterflies’ wings.
Butterfly Pavilion • The pupa stage will last 7 – 10 days.
Adult Butterfly 8 Days after our chrysalises formed, 5 butterflies emerged from them.
Tues, 9 May 2006 4 Butterflies formed correctly. One butterfly has part of the chrysalis attached to it’s wing. • Day 15
Release ____ Days after we received our caterpillars, we let them go to live the rest of their lives in the wild.
