Overview • The Civil Society Data Partnership is an ESRC-funded collaboration led by the University of Stirling, along with the University of St Andrews and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations • Aims: • develop administrative data on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) • help CSOs to improve their ability to work with data, including ‘big data’ • increase collaboration between CSOs and academia

6. Aims and outcomes for today • Network! Strengthen links between third sector organisations, public sector and academic sector • Identify key issues ad research gaps • Make better use of existing assets, resources and data, including open source and ‘big data’ • Better connections with academics leading to more collaboration • Better links with public sector, local intelligence and public sector data sets as well as better understanding of shared priorities • Support for third sector organisations in Aberdeen who collect and hold data, but lack capacity/time to analyse or skills to present and visualise data • Joint research projects and funding bids around local needs and priorities

Making best use of existing data and resources • Funding - Ilse Mackinnon • ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) • ESRC grants are usually open to academic institutions, but the ESRC is increasingly encouraging collaboration with the third sector. Funding streams include • Impact Acceleration Accounts which fund knowledge exchange activities  • Secondary Data Analysis Initiative which funds the deeper analysis of major data resources • Big Lottery • Grant-making trusts • Funding Scotland www.fundingscotland.com • Funding Scotland is a portal that allows users to search for relevant funders and covers all funders – lottery, public and third sector grant-makers.

Making best use of existing data and resources • Funding • Public sector /Scottish Government • A range of public sector funding is available for research – see Funding Scotland. • Key funds include the Scottish Government’s new £9.7m Social Economy Development Programme, which is being introduced to tackle poverty and inequality across Scotland with the support of EU funding. It runs alongside the £18.9m Aspiring Communities Fund. • The Social Innovation Challenge Fund will invest in a 3-stage model of Social Innovation, by supporting new approaches to tackling poverty, through partnership and joint working between the social economy and academic/research organisations. • Stage 1 – provides between £30k and £50k to support research and development of new and creative ideas and potential solutions to social problems(£30k - £50k) • Stage 2 – provides between £100k and £150k to enable partnerships to develop Stage 1 ideas into new products or services, pilot or prototype and measure their effectiveness, understand what works and demonstrate why • Stage 3 – provides between £150k and £250k for the scaling up of Stage 2 products and services that have demonstrated their effectiveness in tackling poverty and disadvantage • Funds open January 2017 • For more info contact: infogrowingthesocialeconomy@gov.scot

The centre is funded over 5 years, and is expected to open Spring 2017.
