Group Discussion Groups of 8-10 candidates are formed into a leaderless group, and are given a specific situation to analyze and discuss within a given time limit, which may vary between ten minutes and forty-five minutes, or They may be given a case study and asked to come out with a solution for a problem. They may be given a topic and are asked to discuss the same.

  3. Types of GD GD’s can be topic-based or case-based.Topic based GD’s can be classified into three types :-1. Factual Topics2. Controversial Topics 3. Abstract Topics

  4. Factual Topics:-Factual topics are about practical things, which an ordinary person is aware of in his day-to-day life. E.g. The education policy of India, Tourism in India, State of the aged in the nation. Controversial Topics:- Controversial topics are the ones that are argumentative in nature. They are meant to generate controversy. E.g. Reservations should be removed, Women make better managers. Abstract Topics:- Abstract topics are about intangible things. These topics are not given often for discussion, but their possibility cannot be ruled out. E.g. A is an alphabet, Twinkle twinkle little star, The number 10.

About GD: • In the chair sits down with straight legs and hands resting on sides • (never sit cross-legged) • Along with small Note book and write the points which are • discussed in the G.D • PLZ note the names of your fellow persons before going to the G.D • that will benefit you much Call all of them with names that will be good point Don't point out anyone with figure Don't see the invigilator (H.R) seating on besides you

Do’s of participating in a GD: • Listen to the subject carefully • Put down your thoughts on a paper • Initiate the discussion if you know the subject well • Listen to others if you don’t know the subject • Support you point with some facts and figures • Make short contribution of 25-30 seconds 3-4 times • Give others a chance to speak & Eye to eye contact. • Speak politely and pleasantly. Respect contribution from other members.  • Disagree politely and agree with what is right.  • Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion. 

  7. Don’ts of participating in a Group Discussion • Don’t Initiate the discussion if you do not have sufficient knowledge about the given topic. • Don’t Over speak, intervene and snatch other’s chance to speak. • Don’t Argue and shout during the GD • Don’t Look at the evaluators or a particular group member • Don’t Talk irrelevant things and distract the discussion • Don’t Pose negative body gestures like touching the nose, leaning back on the chair, knocking the table with a pen etc. • Don’t Mention erratic statistics. • Don’t Display low self confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands. • Don’t Try to dominate the discussion • Don’t Put others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they don’t want. • Don’t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny.

  8. Summarization/ Conclusion • Most GD do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the whole group decides in favor or against the topic. • But every GD is summarized. You can summaries what the group has discussed in the GD in a nutshell.Keep the following points in mind while summarizing a discussion: • Avoid raising new points. • Avoid stating only your viewpoint. • Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the GD. • Keep it brief and concise. • It must incorporate all the important points that came out during the GD. • If the examiner asks you to summaries a GD, it means the GD has come to an end. • Do not add anything once the GD has been summarized.

Evaluation Format for Group Discussion: • Initiating • Participation • New Ideas • Team Spirit • Communication Skills (Verbal) • Listening Skills • Keep argument on track • Eye contact and Gestures • Summarizing • Concluding • Different parts of a GD: - (considering a 15 minutes GD). • Starting period. (1-2 minutes). • Generating ideas. (7-8 minutes). • Building on ideas. (5-6 minutes). • Conclusion. (rarely comes; ½ - 1 minutes)
