  1. VL-E: Virtual Laboratory & System Integration(Sub-program 2.5) Adam Belloum adam@science.uva.nl Computer Architecture and Parallel Systems GroupDepartment of Computer ScienceUniversiteit van Amsterdam

  2. Outline • Role of the Virtual Laboratory & System Integration (SP2.5) • Interaction with other VL-E SPs • Current Developments • Summary and future plans

  3. Role of SP2.5(Interaction within P2) • Defining the VL-E architecture that should integrate the different software components and data structures developed within this whole VL-E project. • Collaboration and performance issues The Role of SP2.5 is to bridge the gap between scientific applications and low layers

  4. Interaction with P1 • In program line P1 • will create domain specific Problem Solving Environments (PSEs) based on the generic Virtual Laboratory methodology and functionality. • The results to be obtained from experiments with the application-specific PSEs • will act as cases that provide feed back to the Generic Virtual Laboratory research.

  5. Bridging the Gap between P1 & P3 • Using the feedback from SP1 SP2.5 • will generate if needed feedback to SP3. • Relay the low layer features to SP1 • SP1 will see the SP3 features as the part of the Generic Virtual Laboratory features

  6. R&D issues for SP2.5(outcome for the VL-E project) • Resource Management in a Grid-based environment • Hide usage details of resources from VL-E end users • Optimize the usage of the available resources in VL-E • Collaboration for e-Science application • Co-design VL-E experiments • Co-Analysis of VL-E experiments results

  7. R&D issues for SP2.5(outcome for the VL-E project) • VL-E experiment model • Designing the model which fits most of the applications considered in SP1 • Previous work performed in VLAM-G project • New development in Grid technology • Integration • Integration of all the generic VL-E components in the Generic Virtual Laboratory layer • The generic VL-E components  feature of the Generic Virtual Laboratory toolkit

  8. How are we going to work? Application feedback Application specific service Medical Application Telescience Bio ASP Application Potential Generic service & Virtual Lab. services Virtual Lab. rapid prototyping (interactive simulation) Virtual Laboratory Additional Grid Services (OGSA services) Grid Middleware Grid & Network Services Network Service (lambda networking) Surfnet VL-E Experimental Environment VL-E Proof of concept Environment Stable Application & VL-e component Unstable Application & VL-e component Vl-E certification Environment A set of tests that have to be passed before any application software or VL-e component can be deployed on the VL-e proof of concept environment

  9. Current Status • In the context of SP2.5, we are working on making the work performed in the context of VLAM-G (ICES/KISII) usable for the VL-E project • A stable version of the VLAM-G software • Packaging of VLAM-G software • Documentation & Tutorials

  10. Current Discussions • Discussion within SP2: • SP2.1  Peter Sloot (to be started after the VL-E workshop) • SP2.2  Pieter Adriaans (contact: Frank Terpstra) • SP2.3  Robert van Liere (to be started after the VL-E workshop) • SP2.4  Ammar Benabdelkader SP1.4 & SP1.5 • Discussion with SP1 • SP1.6 Ron Heeren & Marco Konijnenburg

  11. What type of issues are we discussing • Transition from VLAM-G  VL-E • Generic Virtual Laboratory Architecture • Extending VLAM-G PFT to use Ontology • Extending VLAM-G Module deployment • VL-E issues • An approach to VL-E Module Migration • Grid Web Service approach and how it can be used in the VL-E project. • Collaboration in the VL-E project • Resource management in Grid-based systems

  12. Where to get the information about SP2.5 releases • An official announcement will be made when the VLAM-G software will be deployed in the PoC env. • A stable version is running in the experimental env. • For people to use to get hands on the virtual Laboratory concepts • For fast prototyping • Should not be used for sensitive work • Documentation and distributions are be available from the VL-e web site: http://www.vl-e.nl

  13. Summary • SP2.5 started already discussions with other SPs • SP2.5 has deployed the VLAM-G (VL-E version 1.0) in the experimental env. • SP2.5 is ready to help rapid prototyping in the experimental env.

  14. Future Work(near future) • Upgrade VLAM-G release to: • Pass the certification process • And release the first VL-E Release (VLE-1.0) • Start discussions with other SPs • Design & produce design documents for the different components of the Generic Virtual Laboratory architecture • Based on the discussion with other SPs • And the current state of art in Grid technology

  15. VLAM-G Demonstration • For the First VL-E workshop we have prepared demos of the VLAM-G software deployed in the experimentalenv. • Demos are performed on demand: • During the workshop: can be organized during the breaks • After the workshop: send me an e-mail adam@science.uva.nl

  16. Who is behind SP2.5!!!(www.science.uva.nl/~adam/projects/vl-e/vl-e.html) • Scientific programmers • Dmitry Vasunin • Ph.D students • Vladimir Korkhov • Adianto Wibisono • Frank Terpstra • MSc students • Sander de Ridder • Vincent Buitendijk
