This study focuses on a new strategy of airborne observations, using combo deployments of AXBTs and GPS dropsondes, to gather data on the atmosphere and ocean during the formation and mature phases of tropical cyclones. The objective is to observe the surface wind field, ocean structure, and cold wake formation during these phases. The technical approach involves designing optimal flight plans for WC-130J aircraft, employing real-time data transmission, and conducting joint flights with DOTSTAR ASTRA. Key results include the modulation of TC formation and rapid intensification/decay cycles by underlying ocean eddies. Future plans involve developing diagnostic analysis tools and an operational TC data archive.

Objectives: • Observe atmosphere and ocean during formation phase of candidate TCs • Observe TC Inner-Core surface wind field and ocean structure, especially during RI/RD. • Observe mature phase ‘cold wake’ formation, structure and time evolution. Technical Approach: • Design and execute WC-130J aircraft flight plans for optimal achievement of ITOP goals. • Employ two WC-130J aircraft/crews with SFMR, AXBT and buoy-deployment capability- transmit data in real-time. • Conduct joint flights of 53rd WRS WC-130J and DOTSTAR ASTRA.
