  1. Words reveal our heart • JESUS (Matthew 12:34-37) You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. • {35} The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. • {36} But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. {37} For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

  2. Words hurt! • (Proverbs 11:9) With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor. • (Proverbs 16:28) A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends. • (Proverbs 26:28) A lying tongue hates those it hurts.

  3. Perverse speech • (Proverbs 10:32) The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. • (Ephesians 5:4) Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

  4. The brilliance of saying little or nothing • (Proverbs 10:19) When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. • (Proverbs 13:3) He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin. • (Proverbs 15:28) The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. • (Proverbs 17:27) A man of knowledge uses words with restraint... • (Proverbs 21:23) He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

  5. Wise words • (Proverbs 4:20, 22) My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.. for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. • (Proverbs 10:13) Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning… • (Proverbs 14:3) … the lips of the wise protect them. • (Proverbs 20:15) Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. • (Proverbs 31:26) She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

  6. Words that Heal • (Proverbs 12:6) The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them. • (Proverbs 12:18) Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. • (Proverbs 15:1) A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. • (1 Peter 3:9) Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. • (Proverbs 15:4) The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. • (Proverbs 17:9) He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

  7. Saying the right thing at the right time The Right Words at the Right Time • (Proverbs 10:32) The lips of the righteous know what is fitting. • (Proverbs 15:23) A man finds joy in giving an apt reply-- and how good is a timely word! • (Proverbs 25:11-12) A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. {12} Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear. The Rewards of a Good and Encouraging Words • (Proverbs 12:14) From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him. •  (Proverbs 18:21) The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

  8. Changed life = Changed talk • (Ephesians 4:22-29) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self…to be made new in the attitude of your minds… • {25} Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully… • {26} In your anger do not sin … • {29} Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
