  1. Blood Pressure is the force the blood exerts on the inside lining of the blood vessels as it is pushed along by the heart. Systolic Pressure is the force measured when the heart contracts. It is the top number in a BP reading: 120/60 Diastolic Pressure is the force measured when the heart is relaxed. It is the bottom number in a BP reading: 120/60 Blood pressure

  2. Normal Blood Pressure range = 110 – 120/ 60 -80 Pre High Blood Pressure range = 130 / 90 High Blood Pressure range = 140 + / 90 + Hypertension is the name given to chronic high blood pressure Blood pressure

  3. Hypertension or Chronic High Blood Pressure can lead to Atherosclerosis or narrowing of the blood vessels. This increases the risks of Heart Disease and Stroke. Heart Disease – narrowing or blocking of coronary arteries Stroke – narrowing or blocking of vessels carrying blood to the brain Blood pressure

  4. What is Atherosclerosis ? • Atherosclerosis is the gradual blockage of the coronary arteries. • The upper picture on the left shows a normal coronary artery. • The lower artery is 80% filled with plaque.

  5. Treatments For Atherosclerosis • Chemical solution • Laser • Scraping • Bypass surgery • Angioplasty

  6. Chemical, Laser, Scraping and Bypass treatments • Chemical – there are medicines that can help dissolve clots or thin blood to relieve blockage. • Laser – surgery using lasers that break up the blockage. • Scraping – micro surgery that physically removes plaque on the sides of vessels. • Bypass – surgery that replaces blocked arteries with harvested surgical grafts.

  7. Angioplasty • This type of procedure involves a balloon on a wire that is inserted through the femoral artery in the leg. The wire is fed through the artery until in position in the blocked artery around the heart. The balloon is inflated and deflated until the plaque is flattened and the opening of the artery increased.

  8. How does angioplasty work ?

  9. Stents • Stents are wire supports that can be inserted after an angioplasty to support the vessel wall and prevent it from collapsing or narrowing.

  10. While High Blood Pressure can be a genetic problem there are things one can do to lessen the risk. Risk of Hypertension can be lessened through: Diet Exercise Avoiding Smoking / Alcohol use Managing Stress well Blood pressure

  11. Research and list a suggested healthy diet that indicates the number of calories per day, recommended foods and foods to avoid or limit in order to reduce or maintain a healthy blood pressure. 2. Find out information on how to manage stress. Come up with 10 suggestions to follow to reduce everyday stress. Blood pressure assignment
