Hypertension or Chronic High Blood Pressure can lead to Atherosclerosis or narrowing of the blood vessels. This increases the risks of Heart Disease and Stroke. Heart Disease – narrowing or blocking of coronary arteries Stroke – narrowing or blocking of vessels carrying blood to the brain Blood pressure
What is Atherosclerosis ? • Atherosclerosis is the gradual blockage of the coronary arteries. • The upper picture on the left shows a normal coronary artery. • The lower artery is 80% filled with plaque.
Treatments For Atherosclerosis • Chemical solution • Laser • Scraping • Bypass surgery • Angioplasty
Chemical, Laser, Scraping and Bypass treatments • Chemical – there are medicines that can help dissolve clots or thin blood to relieve blockage. • Laser – surgery using lasers that break up the blockage. • Scraping – micro surgery that physically removes plaque on the sides of vessels. • Bypass – surgery that replaces blocked arteries with harvested surgical grafts.
Angioplasty • This type of procedure involves a balloon on a wire that is inserted through the femoral artery in the leg. The wire is fed through the artery until in position in the blocked artery around the heart. The balloon is inflated and deflated until the plaque is flattened and the opening of the artery increased.
Stents • Stents are wire supports that can be inserted after an angioplasty to support the vessel wall and prevent it from collapsing or narrowing.
