Overview • Objectives • Schedule/Progress • Design Concept Summary • Construction • Wing • Fuselage • Tail • Landing Gear • Goals
Objectives • The plane meets the specifications of the 2004 SAE Aero Design West competition • To complete construction by mid April to allow time for testing and modifications • To compete well at competition and improve Stevens reputation • For the team to improve and expand their knowledge of the design and construction of airplanes
Journal/Progress • Construction • Wing • Tail • In progress: • Landing gear • Fuselage • Boom
WingRibs • Selig 1223 • Print and cut original • Metal cut out template • Final for placement in wing
WingConstruction • Leading edge 3/8 in dowel • Tailing edge triangle • Middle spars 3/8 in pine • Ribs balsa
Wing • Full wing laid out • 10 ft wing span • 1 ft cord • Flap 3 ft
Approximate Size • Stephen 6 ft • Jess 5ft 1 In • Wing span 10 ft • Plane 8 ft
Fuselage • Shortened to 2’-1” long • Made from plywood and balsa wood • Attached to boom externally New design Old design

Horizontal Tail Construction • First Construction • Rectangular and circular bars • Very light weighted • Very low drag • Problem with v. tail and boom attachment
Horizontal Tail Construction • Second Construction: • NACA 0012 • 36 inches x 7.5 inches • Rib design • Servo, boom, and v. tail attachment
Vertical Tail Construction • Final Design: • Dimensions • Height -13.4 in • Width top - 5 in • Width bottom -11.5 in • Balsa bars • Minimum drag
Attachments • Tail Assembly: • Glue in joints • Balsa box • Underside • Attachment for booms • Servos • Covered with monocote
A Day In The Lab • Chi and Jess working • Rich and Yoosuk working
Problems • Design changes due to: • Material • Not perfect • Cost • Equipment • Improvised with equipment available • Time • Construction vs. Drawings
Goals • Complete construction • Coating the plane • Test engine • Test landing gear configuration • Test plane • Modify if necessary • Compete in June
