  1. Satire: Using Literature as a vehicle for social change EQ: How does Twain use irony as a tool of satire? Journal 4/6—Should Huck turn Jim in? Why? Make sure you have Sharpies and markers ready!

  2. What is satire? A literary manner which blends humor with criticism for the purpose of instruction or the improvement of humanity Look at yourself and the world around you, and then make a change!

  3. Huck Finn, as satire? • Twain often uses comedy and ironic situations to make the reader take another look at himself and/or his society. • Twain gives Jim many stereotypical black, slave behaviors, but his actions often disprove these stereotypes • IRONIC • Twain makes a critical comment on his society and the treatment of African-Americans—ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SAME. ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT IGNORANT. MANY BLACK PEOPLE ARE VICTIMS OF THEIR SOCIETY.

How does Twain use irony as a vehicle of satire? • Remember irony is the difference between expectation and reality. • The king and duke comedic Shakespearean Tragedy. • Irony and ironic situations can often make us laugh and think twice • Irony is the perfect vehicle for satire • Makes us laugh—humor • Makes us think

  7. Using the table below, analyze the cartoons’ use of irony and satire to make a comment about society. Each person should analyze one cartoon. You may help your group members.

  8. Ticket • Using the paper/marker provided write or draw one example of an ironic situation in the novel • Put all names on the paper • May be used for the wall of irony • HW—read through Chapter 30 (Finish 30)
