Before Reading-optional • Scan the passage for the following vocabulary • Write down the sentences in which you find the words. • Vocabulary for the passage: • Rumbling • Tremble • Rattle • Fault line • Settlers • Legends • Match the words to the pictures (the pictures could be multiple meanings and therefore not have anything to do with the passage. • Based on these words and the sentences, what do you think the article is going to be about?

  3. Student Objectives • Identify main idea and critical details in a text • Fill out a Graphic Organizer

  4. Main Idea • The main idea of the paragraph or passage is what the passage is about. • If you are trying to find a stated main idea, look for the sentence that all the other sentences connect to. • If you are trying to find an unstated main idea, think of the thought the passage leaves you with. What is the paragraph or passage trying to say? • The main idea may be stated directly at the beginning of the text—OR, it may be at the end.

  5. Directions • Read aloud the article. • What is this article mainly about? • Underline details that support the main idea. • Which sentence tells the main idea of the entire article? (the last sentence) • Fill out the Graphic Organizer on the back of your handout.

  6. Details • Details are facts or information that support the main idea.

Possible Answers • Main Idea: There have been different ideas about why Moodus has had so many earthquakes • Detail: Scientists believe earthquakes are caused by fault lines. • Detail: The Wangunk believe the quakes came from their god, Hobomoko. • Detail: A doctor from England blamed the quakes on a glowing rock.
