President Truman • Committee on Civil Rights is created under President Truman. • Congress makes passes a law prohibiting lynching, however this did not stop lynching from occurring in many southern states.
Brown vs. Board of Education • The court decided that the separate but equal doctrine was unconstitutional due to the effect it had mentally on African American children. • Southern states continued with segregation regardless of the courts ruling , and in many and many whites responded to this decision with violence.
Civil disobedience • Rosa Parks- After refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, Rosa Parks caused a boycotting of the bus system, despite violent opposition segregation of bus lines was illegalized. • Lunch counters became open to blacks in Greensboro due to the Greensboro sit-ins, though those involved were arrested
Civil Disobedience Cont. • Freedom Riders: In resistance to segregation, many blacks and whites began to ride the bus together, however these buses were often pulled over, and the passengers would be beat both black and white. Since the law enforcement we prejudice as well nothing was done about the violence until the situation began to gain infamy on the new.
Discussion Questions • Is non-violent protest really more effective then violence? • Is understanding the consequences important when committing civil disobedience? • How could the government have better reinforced the decision of Brown vs. Board?
