Most students will just find an answer by “eyeballing” it. Some will set up a proportion. After a while, ask if anyone did it w/o eyeballing it?? They will have used the equation! Make a big deal about this. Talk about why the proportion doesn’t work (it’s not proportional).

Get into your Groups i-can predict how many marbles it takes to break XX pieces of spaghetti noodles. My prediction is: ______ How many it really took: _____ Pages XX of your INB
SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. Complete the 2 practice problems with students (see homework). This will get them ready to do Spaghetti Lab. 1. Make a prediction using the table. 30 pictures will take _____ seconds ≈23 2(11.5) = 23 seconds
SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. Just use interwrite to complete the graph with the students. Label your axes in increments of 2. 1. Complete the graph.

SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. 1. ≈23 Prediction using table: _____ Prediction using LoB: _________ How close are they? _________ 22 off by 1 y=2/3x+2 y=2/3(30)+2 y=22
SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. 2. Make a prediction using the table. $250 means about _____ phone calls ≈38 2 ½ (15) = 37.5 phone calls
SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. Just use interwrite to complete the graph with the students. Use increments of 2 for phone calls (x-axis) & increments of 24 for money collected (y-axis) 2. Complete the graph.
SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. 2. 25 4 SLOPE: __________ Y-INTERCEPT: __________ Line of Best Fit: __________ 35 y=25/4x+35
Why is the table off by 3.5 compared to the equation? B/c the table has non-linear points. Talk about how table predictions are “ok”, but if you were collecting thousands of dollars per day, you would want to be able to make a pretty accurate prediction about phone calls. Being off by 3.5 would compound to being off by hundreds of phone calls! That’s not good enough. Linear equations give most accurate predictions! SPAGHETTI LAB WARM UP Follow along. 2. ≈38 calls Prediction using table: _____ Prediction using LoB: _________ How close are they? _________ 34.4 calls off by 3.5 y=25/4x+35 250=25/4x+35 -35 -35 ÷25/4 ÷25/4 215 =25/4x 34.4 = x
