Healthy Smiles for 2! • Objectives • Discuss dental diseases • Examine how oral health effects the body • Review ways to maintain good oral health • Discuss oral health and pregnancy • Review ways to keep baby’s mouth healthy
Overview of Dental BSS • Created by the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (1970’s) • Non-invasive oral health screening • Notes the presence of caries, fillings, and sealants or ECC; estimates treatment urgency • Done by medical or dental professionals
Importance • Take a snapshot of the state’s oral health needs • Plan OH programs for the state • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs
Dental BSS Trainers • Participate in a calibration training conference call • Provide training • Submit sign sheet and training evaluations • Provide feedback on the training

Outcomes • Building a statewide system of trained healthcare professionals. • Implementing surveillance requires partnering with many groups in the state and can assist in establishing a broad based group participating with future oral health surveillance initiatives.
