This afternoon……. • You will have a clearer idea of how SD will work at Sussex this year. • You will understand some of the differences and similarities with GTP and PGCE • Some key decisions to be made e.g. second school placements and taught course attendance will have been discussed and explored
School Direct? So what’s all the fuss about? …….Its very much like the PGCE and the GTP!……
Basic concept – school led – responding to success of employment based route to teaching • Emphasis on high quality applicants and degree quality (2:1 or above) • Captures best practice from GTP high trainee performance outcomes and retention rates and merges with academic high standards of Sussex PGCE • Intended to enable schools to select and train their own staff ‘grow your own teacher’ • Target is that half all teachers trained will have undertaken School Direct
Clusters of schools become ‘ITE providers’ • leading the recruitment process in partnership with universities • making decisions about how, when and where training is delivered • negociating the kind of training they want for their trainees from a mix of HEI providers (universities) • Developing their own training character and entity and enjoying greater ‘ownership’ over trainees who are fully immersed in school life
Universities • Provide support and guidance in the ITE recruitment and selection process new to many schools • Offer various training and support packages • Remain responsible for quality assurance and assessment and award a PGCE • Are still accountable re OfSTED at least in the short term
As with PGCE and GTP partnership is key! BEST PRACTICE – strong and clear partnership should run right the way through School Direct from the recruitment to the assessment stage like letters in a stick of Brighton rock…..
Types of Place - 1. SD Training Place – leads to a Sussex PGCE • Trainee recruited by school • Funded by trainee Sussex tuition fee of £9,000 (as with PGCE). Sussex University receives £6,000 from the fee, school receives £3000 • School paid in 3 termly instalments of £1000 by university • Any subject possible at Sussex as funded by tuition fee as long as appropriate training programme can be provided.
SD training places cont….. • Trainee attends Sussex university taught course. Or a training programme is devised where the subject is not taught at Sussex • At Sussex the course leads to a PGCE with 60 M Level Credits and an optional further 30 credits for a fee of £912. • Start on first day of school autumn term and finish with PGCE trainees in June
Training Bursaries for SD training places * Other priority secondary subjects include English, geography, , Latin, Greek, music, biology PE, computer science, history. All other subjects attract no bursary. Maintenance grants and student loans available. • Tuition fee: £9000 supported by student loan. once employed and earning £2100 repayable.
Types of place cont…2. SD Salary place – leads to QTS • Trainee employed as unqualified teacher for 1 year (as with GTP) - aimed at career changers • Must have equivalent of 3 years work experience (not necessarily in education) • No supernumerary requirement unlike GTP and can have up to 80% timetable however most schools in partnership ensuring largely supernumerary at the beginning based on GTP good practice
Salary places cont..... • Salary grant from NCTL funding £19,000 for Maths, Chemistry, Physics, MFL • Salary funding £14,000 from NCTL for Primary, English, Music, History, Latin, Greek, Biology, PE, Geography, Computer Science • Enhancement of nearly 2k for schools with more than 35% free school meals • Must be paid as an unqualified teacher (recommend bottom point) or academies are free to set pay. Schools meets on costs and any shortfall between grant and pay • Schools responsible for contract as unqualified teacher, DBS (CRB) and health checks
Salary places cont….. • Most schools sending salaried trainees to full university training course however there is more flexibility for some of this training to be provided in school • 60 day training requirement - schools responsible for ensuring compliancy through a training plan • School pays the university £3000 course fee. This will be invoiced in three termly instalments of £1000 • Starts first day of term in September finishes on last day of school term in July
3. Self funded places……… • Schools can take trainees on the employment based version in any subject if they are able to pay salary costs plus university tuition fee of £3000 • Subjects suitable for this type of place include any subject not covered by a salary grant, and may be tailored to an individual with prior teaching experience • No PGCE awarded – QTS only • Also suitable for independent schools
Some further key features • Salaried trainees are subject to contract with school under employment law • Headteacher is line-manager and should set out expectations for both salaried and training place SDs • Salaried trainee is member of teaching staff and training place trainee seen as such and should adhere to professional values and culture and ethos of school e.g. time keeping, dress. • Follows school procedures and policies • Attend all staff meetings, school INSET (training days for teachers within school), planning and preparation, involved in extra curricular activities
PGCE Pedagogy and Practice (PGCE PP) • Sussex award available for those on QTS only route to take a 60 M level credit PGCE (PP) • Cost to individual trainee £1825 • Comprises curriculum essay and final assessment but can opt for an additional module at a cost of £912 to gain 90 credits towards the Masters. • Supports future Progression onto MEd and teaching abroad (non EU) • Also appropriate for other self funded places, non HEI SD providers and ex GTPs/SDs
School Training and Support • Induction including trainees already on the staff • Session once a week for an hour with mentor Trainees to keep a log. Training input, regular review of progress and target setting • Professional studies delivered once a week, Combination of PGCE and NQT sessions • Weekly observations by mentor PT or classteacher (training required where not the mentor)
School training and support cont.. • A training plan showing how and when the topics missed will be covered should be developed by the school for any salaried trainees not attending the university course. • Day to day support and advice from other colleagues • Planning and department meetings, courses, staff meetings, INSET
University Training and Support on offer • Induction Weeks Fri 6th 12th- Fri 27th September 2013 • Taught sessions Fridays until February halfterm (more sporadic thereafter) , lectures, seminars, workshops, school visits • Partnership tutor visit to school to discuss training and review progress with mentor, PT and trainee • Curriculum subject tutor visit once per placement each term to observe lessons jointly with mentor
University training cont...... • Telephone/email support • Academic support with assignments • Review tutorial once per term on campus with tutor • Clear cause for concern procedures (in handbook)
Teaching Load – secondary training place • Initially observe and support, team teach across the department. • By mid October trainees should have taught at least one whole class lesson and thereafter will build up to 8-9 hours of whole class teaching per week by Christmas. • Formal weekly observations begin after halfterm (or before informally) • By half term in spring12 hours teaching • By half term in summer three 14-16 hours teaching • Teaching must be across the two given key stages from term one.
Reports; see handbook for dates and details • Weekly graded lesson observation from halfterm • Two brief Progress Update reports (PUR) • Two detailed Professional Practice Profiles (PPPs) • One complementary school placement report
Teaching load secondary salaried place • Can have up to a 80% timetable but will need sufficient time for training (60 days including university element) • Advisable to keep as supernumerary as possible for the first half of the year depending on prior teaching experience and build teaching load gradually. • Teaching should be in their specialist subject and across their chosen key stages.
Teaching load – primary (see sample timetable) • Assign one class in one of chosen key stages but also observe and assist across school gaining experience in each year group • Whole class teaching and weekly formal observations begins at the beginning of November • Undertake shared planning, plan for small group work, teach parts of full class lessons • By early December be teaching approximately 4 lessons a week
Teaching Load primary cont... • January-Mid February 8 hours a week • March – early April building to 14 hours a week whole class teaching before moving to second placement after Easter • In second placement trainee is assigned class in other key stage
Complementary school placement options - Minimum 20 days • 1. Primary style - after Easter for 5 weeks (all primaries go here) • 2. GTP style - for 4, 5 or 6 weeks after spring halfterm • 3. PGCE style – long second placement from Spring halfterm to Summer halfterm • 4. Serial Style – one day a week for 20 days minumum
Focus of Complementary School Placement • Experience of another school, organisation and ethos • To gain experience of teaching in another environment and catchment area • To use the time to look at aspects of teaching or their secondary subject or cover standards not yet achieved, for primary subjects not yet taught (e.e. Humanities taught in blocks) • School responsible for arranging – Sussex can help – advise swops if possible. See trainee and school list.
Training plans for those not attending the full taught course • Training plan for each trainee drawn up from initial needs assessment, subject auditand based on generic plan showing what should be covered over the year • PT/mentor and trainee write training plan together. Trainee to take responsibility for typing updates • Copies for SD tutor termly • Plan includes development of subject knowledge
Training plans cont… • Training plan must show 60 days training activity requirement and can include; mentor meetings, prof studies, INSET, feedback from observations, visits to other schools, focussed observations, directed tasks, work on assignments other training • Needs to show how curriculum studies sessions not attended will be delivered and good practice visits/input from other schools/tutors • Should be up and running by autumn halfterm

SD 2014-2015 • Further expansion including additional primary places • Registration still open for new schools but hurry! • Bidding round started last week • Schools can request subject/primary places process open until 23rd September 2014 • Allocations during October • Please talk to us re subjects/training delivery – we can accommodate most modes
Applications 2014-2015…….. • New UCAS application system opens 1st November – • First applications expected to arrive at lead schools late Nov/early Dec (with 2 references attached) • Apply 1= 1st Nov onwards – applications are sent to three destinations concurrently e.g. 1 PGCE, 2 x SD schools • Schools have 40 business days from application to make decision or candidate automatically rejected
Applications cont… • Apply 2 = 1st Jan onwards and is for those not successful in apply 1, Applications get sent to one destination at a time • Schools may wish to consider Autumn recruitment events Mid October – could organise joint one • Suggested process – a) Apps to lead schools for first screening b) those with potential sent to university for screening, subject interview and compliancy checks c) ALL paperwork for ALL candidates returned to school and SCHOOL makes decision whether not to proceed with school interview for each applicant
