Who was Arna Bontemps? • Arna Bontemps was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on October 13, 1902. • His family moved to California when was three years old. • His father tried to make him forget about his heritage, which he resented. • Bontemps graduated from Pacific Union College in Angwin in 1923. • In 1924 he moved to Harlem with his wife and children after accepting a teaching job at the Harlem Academy. Around this time he also began to publish poetry. • While teaching in Harlem he became very closely connected to the Harlem Renaissance and some of major people, such as: Countee Cullen, W.E.B. DuBois, Zora Neale Hursto , n and Langston Hughes.
