United Cooperative Services • Distribution cooperative headquartered in Cleburne, Texas with 7 offices, 75,000 meters, and 10,100 miles of line across 3,400 sq. miles
What is Energy Innovation? We are required to do this by Cooperative Policy
The Case for Energy Innovation Electric G&T Portion United’s Portion
Today’s Challenges Require Energy Innovation “Use all you want, We’ll build more” • Volatile Fuel Prices • + • Capacity & Transmission Challenges • + • Uninformed Consumers • + • Environmental Concerns • CONSUMER SHOCK!
Tomorrow’s Vision Applies Energy Innovation Smart Grid + Smart Homes + Smart Businesses + Decentralized Power Generation + Renewable Energy + Behavioral Changes SMART CONSUMER SOLUTIONS control costs and meet legislative and public policy Demands
Bridging the Paradigms Conservation Education Innovative Rates Efficiency DG Consumer Engagement Renewables
Current Rebate Programs We want to participate in energy savings upgrades!
Rebate Program Impact • Comparing rebate-based energy usage versus that of the base home allows us to estimate overall impact of rebate programs
Get your FREE Energy Audit… • Do energy audits provide kWh savings? • How can you measure and validate this?
… and more data… • Meter data pre and post audit • Audit timeframe limited to allow enough pre and post audit data • Meter data must be constant – no seasonal accounts, disconnects issues, etc. • Apply weather normalization factors • Compare pre and post audit usage data in pre and post groups • And then…
Energy Audits do Save Energy! • 63% of accounts reduced their average energy consumption following their energy audit
How Much Energy do They Save? • Accounts with energy audits used about 6.62% less energy than those not having the same = 1,040 kWh saved annually
Does Voltage Reduction Work? • United has utilized voltage reduction during peak for many years – there are many variables that affect the performance of VR
Voltage Reduction Impact • Helps more to reduce peak kW but does have a kWh impact as well
Response to Calls for Load Shed • Load Curtailment Program for C&I Members can yield some success
Load Curtailment Can Work • Need to ensure the right members sign up for the program and that they are really prepared to perform
Distributed Resource Programs at United • Have and continue to develop staffing expertise on installation and operation of DR • Have full online resource with information and links to area vendors and other information • Have full interconnection and net metering policy • Allows net metering for systems < 50 KW • Allows energy purchase by United for systems > 50 KW– avoided energy costs from G&T • Have suspended the calculated monthly tariff fee for interconnection to encourage installs • Have worked with media to showcase installs
Results of Distributed Resource Programs • As of April 1, United has the following systems interconnected • Wind = 16 turbines ranging from 2.0 kW to 5.5 kW • Solar = 6 systems ranging from 2.0 to 7.5 kW • Combo Wind/Solar = 1 rated 3.3 kW • United will be installing units at all cooperative offices over the next two years to demonstrate costs and capacity factors for our members to review first-hand
How Do You Track this Stuff? • United has developed the Energy Innovation Data Management System
The End Results • We have to continually track as we move forward – kWh savings of ALL programs
Expanded programs across all Energy Innovation categories What’s next… • Link to kWh savings to carbon savings • Expanded tracking through United’s EIDMS • Increased education for members on programs • Better/automated reporting of results through United’s EIDMS • Storage of Energy Audit results for members to access electronically
